APPLIED ART FORMS is a fashion label drawing inspiration from vintage, utilitarian and workwear clothing – updating, reimagining and improving classic pieces into brand new covetable wardrobe staples that will last a lifetime. Combining new design details and durable, modern classic fabrics which improve with age, A/A/F was born from creative director Guy Berryman’s love of pared-down, military-inspired design.

As such Guy’s own vast collection houses pieces which have inspired these brand- new garments; himself an avid collector, Guy’s travels as bass player with Coldplay have allowed him to source a cornucopia of classic pieces over many years. His own wardrobe includes many core items of military workwear which themselves inspired early Helmut Lang and Margiela, all aesthetics that inform A/A/F.

I have long been interested in classic workwear and military clothes. At heart, I’m a collector who gets excited by the smallest detail of design. Over time I realised that there were still gaps in my wardrobe because I wanted clothing that was suited to the way we live now, with every design element considered and honed into a perfect garment. For me, form and function are everything, and in designing the core pieces for this collection, I was driven by the need to create clothes which were the consummate expression of great design and perfect fabrics. These are clothes for wearing every day. They won’t date and they won’t let you down.

These are garments with a story to tell – fabrics proven in the toughest conditions, shapes, styles and cuts evolved and improved, new classics forged from knowledge of the past. As such A/A/F unites history and the present in enduring, timeless designs matched with the best fabrics, craftsmanship and detailing.

The debut collection from A/A/F features a full range of pieces including the exceptionally crafted and versatile, ‘Modular Parka: Full System’. Inspired by classic military parkas, at the heart of the system is the AM2-1A parka. This can be configured as either a tailored officer-style coat or a more traditional parka, with interchangeable hood, collars and can be varied in length. The Full System also incorporates the APPLIED ART FORMS Liner Coat and Liner Vest.

The first drop from A/A/F also includes the Japanese Cargo Pants, an interpretation of a Swedish-issue dead stock item, handcrafted in Japan from Cotton Cordura – a high quality Japanese fabric that blends the softness of cotton with the strength of nylon. Front pleats allow a fitted waist whilst the cut gives an extremely relaxed fit.

Completing the range are plain and hand stenciled tees, crewneck sweaters, hoodies and beanies, all in a variety of colours inspired by the military colour palette present throughout the collection.

A brand on a mission, and looking at their first season, accomplished!
