By Laura Nesbitt, Junior Contributing Editor (

Meet Ciaran McClure of Glasgow, a 17 year old who represents a new age of shopping for the ‘Gen Z’ a.k.a iGen generation. A digital generation shaping the way brands sell online. Ciaran, is a self-described brand freak.

Brands who know their audience are worth the investment. I follow brands on Instagram to stay up to date on what’s going on in the marketplace. Price, authenticity and transparency are key to making a purchase.

Glasgow is a cultural hotbed. In 2019 the European Commission measured the cities cultural vibrancy, creative economy and enabling environment resulting in being named the UK’s top cultural and creative city by the European Commission. So not only is Ciaran inspired by the creative branding available at the touch of his thumb, he also breathes the air of the first European capital of culture.

We gave Ciaran the task to get online and select his top 10 outerwear styles for Winter. Where better placed to know a thing or two about Winter and Jackets than Scotland? Words by Ciaran…

1. The North Face Diablo Down Jacket

Mens Diablo Down Jacket by The North Face

I represent a younger generation buying Outerwear brands. For me, The North Face falls into the Streetwear category. They have done a number of collaborations in recent years including Supreme, Brain Dead and Vans. These are all pretty cool collabs’ when it comes to looking fresh. Just make sure you don’t wear one at the same time as your dad.

Fred Perry is one of my favourite brands and is very popular with teenage boys my age. It consists of a black and white colour with a very simple stripe design on the lower back which I really like.

5. Columbia Rockfall Down Parka

Columbia Rockfall Jacket

This is a great jacket for men, but not so much for m age group. I would still prefer to buy Nike or North Face. What I love about this jacket, is that you have four colour ways to choose from. It’s lining is 100% polyester with reflective lining and omni heat, a thermal reflective retaining body heat. The jacket itself is £270 which is a bit pricey in my opinion but is sure to keep you warm.

  • Omni-Heat™ thermal reflective
  • RDS certified down
  • Water resistant fabric
  • 550 fill power down insulation
  • Removable hood
  • Removable, adjustable hood
  • Dual entry hand pockets

6. 7L (Seven Layer) 3L Waterproof Outer Orange

7L (Seven Layer) 3L Waterproof Outer

I love this colour, it’s not something you usually see. The jacket is manufactured from 100% Japanese recycled polyester and a recycled membrane. Good level of waterproofness without the taped seams. Great looking piece, something I would like to save up for.

  • Designed and engineered in the UK
  • New Classic Military 7L x ARKAIR Overhead Half Zip Smock is manufactured from 100% Organic Cotton (Dinsmore Kells, Northern Ireland)
  • Completely drop lined making it fully waterproof with a DWR finish
  • Hydrophobic properties repel water
  • Boasts a fully taped breathable mesh membrane too

7. Nike Sportswear Hybrid Jacket

Nike Sportswear Hybrid Jacket

This one is so popular. It is selling well in major retailers and I’m sure I will see it around more this Winter. The jacket is polyester made with 2-layer hood and synthetic fill for warmth with further insulation in the front with a double-knit fleece in a black. Good jacket for going to school in.

  • Black colourway
  • Made from polyester with a warming synthetic fill insulation
  • Ffurther insulating baffles on the front
  • 2-layer hood which can be cinched in for custom coverage while the lower sleeves are made from double-knit fleece for even more heat
  • With a 2-way zipper for custom ventilation, this jacket is finished with a white Futura logo printed on the left chest

8. The North Face Himalayan Synthetic Jacket

The North Face Himalayan Synthetic Jacket

This jacket is at Number 8 because I don’t like the design much, it’s just my personal opinion. More mountain than urban for me. I don’t think the price is justified with the synthetic lining. Scotland gets pretty cold and wet in Winter and unsure it will do the job!

  • Adjustable hem
  • Synthetic insulated jacket with hood
  • Two exposed-zip chest and hand pockets
  • Front exposed zip with inner flap
  • Synthetic insulated jacket with hood

9. Primark Puffer Jacket

Primark Puffer Jacket

From personal experience I had this jacket last year and for only £30 pounds it was an absolute bargain and highly recommend it. Of course, the quality of the jacket was lacking but I was shocked that it lasted me the whole year and I still frequently wear it. However, I did regularly wear a jumper underneath the jacket as the jacket by itself was not very warm but for the price I was surprised at how durable the jacket was.

10. Raeburn SI Quilted Jacket Navy

Raeburn SI Quilted Jacket Navy

Raeburn is a new brand for me. I like how all materials used in the jacket are recyclable. It looks like it would definitely be a popular jacket and I could easily see my friends and I with this jacket on. In my opinion £225 seems a fair price considering the quality and look of the product.

  • Thermore insulated Quilted Jacket with zig-zag top stitch detail
  • Straight hemline finish with bungee cord & cord lock adjustment
  • Stand collar
  • x3 angled front welt pockets with zip closure
