Threads of Structure - Tailoring x Architecture

In a world where disposable design and fast fashion have become prevalent, there is a greater need for time and consideration in design and craftsmanship. The common thread between the creation of space that surrounds us is found in the ideas of form and function. Too often are principles and philosophy compromised, we need to celebrate the timeless elegance which is created out of our passion and skill.

Body of Tailoring

The meticulous process behind hand tailored garments takes time to understand, appreciate and perfect. Like an architect, the tailor has to create the foundations, solid and hidden structure, under the fabric of the garment to ensure the shape and fit create the perfect silhouette for the wearer. The texture and drape of the cloth are considerations of the aesthetic for movement and performance.
The creation of space, which surrounds us, is now about sculpting an external representation of our own personality. Whether it is to mask or reveal, the precision of the materials chosen, combined with the purpose of which the garment is used there needs to be a constant and subtle balance. This deep understanding requires a keen eye, and ear, to ensure the individual is portrayed in the correct way, by the clothing they adorn.

A Sense of Space
Today Interior design acts as a canvas, style and aesthetics combined to beautify the functional. A well designed space is a reflection of the individual, expressing lifestyle and personality. This has been the case for the wealthy for centuries, creating impressive and often imposing spaces to reflect station and education. Ideas from other parts of the world were included to create environments which were the fusion of ideas.
Much like the tailored garment, the interior spaces of the past were created to convey comfort and grandeur, both minimal and opulent. The use of light in relation to proportion, gave the perfect scene to showcase furniture and art. The use of heavy and fine textiles gave the richness and comfort to the design narrative. The combination of all these aspects, created a lasting style born out of craft and innovation.

Building Form
Architecture in its most unique form exists as an impact on the senses. All aspects of form, function and craft are combined together by the architect either at odds with, or in harmony with their surroundings. To create inner spaces which are bathed in natural light has always been the most important aspect in the arrangement of space within a building.
The modern bond between architecture and tailoring extends into the ideals of sustainability. Today both crafts are aware of the environment and their impact to it. As a suit in high quality locally sourced tweed, is designed to last, aspects of historic architecture echo this timeless robustness, for the generations, not seasons.
A Question of Balance
There are many similarities in the aspects of tailoring and architecture. In historic buildings the outer shell gave the sense of grandeur and wealth, and the interior personality and comfort for the finer things. With choice, there is intention, and this bond cultivates ideas of longevity, and lasting. Clothing is our individual representation to the world, and today, more than ever, we should focus on quality and craftsmanship, thinking ahead but looking back, to balance knowledge and innovation in equal measure.
